JOSH MARTINEZ RELEASES PISSED OFF WILD

The men who made this record were a scrappy, hardscrabble group, who fought each other as much as they fought other bands, and more often than not, fought the crowd itself. The list of locales was epic. Hawaii, Tahiti, St Tropez, P.E.I., Cleveland, Japan. And everywhere the band went, disaster was never far behind. By the time the Pissed Off Wild record was finally done, so was the band. Jimmy quit…Joey got married. Should have known we’d never get far. But, looking back, those were the best days of my life.
Pissed Off Wild, aka The P.O.W., is the product of 3 incredible musicians and one Josh Martinez. The music played here is off the floor, no click tracks, no studio wizardry, just the magic of naked aggression, biting sarcasm and the unabashed pursuit of the Good Times. The music was visionary, the best of punk, blues, doo wop and sprawling epics that borrowed from everywhere and sounded like nothing else. It still doesn’t. And it would be a shame not to release this incredible music, created by a brilliant band at the height of it creative powers, captured right before their inevitable downfall.
The Band
Jesse Waldman, guitarist and engineer extraordinaire, and his studio Red Light Sounds, for capturing the beauty, the magic and the dirt from the multiple sessions recorded in its warm crevices. His tireless effort to help finish this record over multiple years is a testament to his manhood, and also to the power of Rock.
Pete Schmitt, the bass player, the backbone and the Believer, carried this record on his back to bring it to the surface. When push came to shove, Pete punched you right in the face, with his Skater-Hippie attitude and his awesome fighting skills. A German hats off to him.
Kenton Loewen, the sexiest member of the group, and also the drummer, is a tour de force one man wrecking machine. Kenton brought that ‘unfuckwithable’ attitude to the table and hated pretty much every other band we ever played with. His skills on the skins were only bettered by the power of his lighting quick uppercut.
And Josh Martinez, who died during the creation of this record, is remembered for his gutsy performances and brilliant wit, but whose obvious ego, and shitty fighting skills were a detriment to the group’s image, and whose horrific death led to the band’s eventual demise.
Thanks to all our friends in East Vancouver, for an incredible era of raised expectations and raucous joy! Special thanks to every East Van dive bar that no longer exists. Thanks to all the police, lawyers, and members of the Tahiti government who stepped in to help when things went sideways, and for all those who kept details hush hush when things got ugly. To our fans who supported us through the thick and thin, through the blood and the carnage, and the tedious legal proceedings, you are forever in our hearts.
To our home and native land, we are forever thankful to be Canadian. To all those who got punched by someone in the band, next time Watch your Fucking Mouth! POW!

JOSH MARTINEZ – PISSED OFF WILD – OUT MAY 31

Camobear Records is pleased to announce the releaseof Josh Martinez’ new album, Pissed Off Wild, on MAY 31, 2011.  Nova Scotian born, Vancouver matured, Portland based multi-tasking artist /music industry visionary, Josh Martinez’ latest musical venture does not see him resting on the laurels of what he’s proven to be successful in the past.  Pissed Off Wild is an extraordinary leap outside the already unlimited boundaries that Martinez observes.

Taking its inspiration from 60s psyche-rock, 70s blues, 80s punk, 90s grunge and the failings of the 21st century, Martinez has produced an original work of music unlike anything made yet.  Full band, no click tracks, mostly live off the floor, has resulted in a labor of love that took five years to make.  It represents the strongest Martinez record yet, with a grown up sound that mixes solid production with the whimsy and sexy good times that the big boys are most known for.  This record could share a room with Gnarls Barkley, G.G. Allen, Black Keys and Beck and still GET LAID.

JOSH MARTINEZ – RELEASE DATE FOR THE POW

You’ve heard rumors, maybe even seen the madness live, but finally, after years of perfecting the blend, Josh Martinez is ready to announce a release date for his hyperactive rock project The Pissed Off Wild.

After 5 years of uninhibited disappointment, setbacks, failure, fire, raining frogs, garbage strikes, Stephen Harper, Roofies and sexually transmitted innuendo, the PISSED OFF WILD album has made its way into the oozing viscuous puss of the modern era. Started five years ago in Vancouver, BC, when Martinez was full of chutzpah, ample virginity and the full breasted lifestyle of a young hungry dreamer, The Pissed Off Wild album is a triumph of tribulations.

The album is titled “The Bender is Dead…” as a testament to finishing something destined for historic revision, an incredible musical journey that five years ago was cutting edge and to this day is still ahead of the curve of 99% of the new indie rap game. The one rule was that each song could not have more than 2 verses of rap and most have significantly less. It moves from minimal punk fight songs, to drunk Irish singalongs, to gorgeous melancholy heartache that sounds like the Black Keys at their best.

A lot of opinions and spilled milk later, the project was finally completed over XMAS this year. Mixed by young genius Prince “Rick Rubin” Strickland, the final product is a masterpiece in no uncertain terms. Fans of Martinez solo work will see in this project a return to an older style, a looser Martinez (if such a thing is even possible) a more naive, vulnerable, intellectual piss-ant, but with cockiness ratcheted up to beyond all measure.

It was a cocky era, full of cocky bandmates who would almost always get into fist fights with other bands on the bill they deemed were less worthy. It got so punk rock that THE POW were banned from the city of Vancouver for a year while the tension died down. The band spent much of that year touring Japan, Hawaii and Australia, building up a reservoir of fight songs and new kinds of punches.

Sadly, there is currently no such thing as the band left to play this music, but originally, the Pissed Off Wild was made up of Martinez on lead vocals and congas, Pete Schmitt on bass, Jesse Waldman on guitar, Kenton Loewen on drums. Jesse was tragically killed in a hippie stampede on an unnamed Gulf Coast Island, and Kenton contracted “the fever” and has been on the road playing hired gun drums for the highest bidder in every awesome place since. So the Pissed Off Wild, as it was once known, is no more. But the music stands as a testament to a forward thinking journey into the most remote regions of music thievery, borrowing solidly from HipHop, Punk, Jazz, Soul, Blues Rock and anything else we thought we could pull off at the time.

The Pissed Off Wild was named after a friends father, who, whilst raising three teenage daughters, would often find his patience bored down the gullyhole. When confronted with the sassy female teenager bravado, he would shake his fist relentlessly, yelling with increasing pitch that he was getting “PISSED OFF…WILD!!!!”. The Music was made over 3 years, with no click tracks and beds laid down and messed with forever, as Martinez worked his lyrics and singing into a place where it matched the power of the music. The fighting, the sadness, the regret, the beauty and the times have never been more evident than on this project, Josh Martinez & The Pissed Off Wild – The Bender is Dead….

GET YOURS HERE ON TUESDAY, JUNE 14th!

COMOX VALLEY RECORD DESCRIBES JOSH MARTINEZ AS “GLOBE TROTTING SEX MACHINE”

Josh Martinez is a machine.

A well-oiled, straight-talking, globetrotting sex machine, who’s travelled the world more than the avian flu, Martinez has built himself a devout following addicted to his hopeful perspective, joie de vivre and a live show that brings the heat like a Catholic schoolgirl in a confession booth.

Don’t believe it? Check him out Oct. 15 at the Waverley Hotel in Cumberland.

Martinez has never been easy to categorize. The People’s Champ is one of the most diverse artists in the music game, surpassing the limitations of indie hip hop by pursuing an “innovative and entirely unique hybrid of clever pop melodies and intelligent, layered songwriting that borrows from everywhere and sounds like nothing else.” — Spin

As an entertainer, Martinez is in the upper echelons of the business, bringing a confidence, urgency and a comedic touch that has converted disbelievers and brought houses down, rocked to their very foundation.

As an artist, Martinez has a rap sheet longer than repeat offenders, but as a businessman, he has only begun to polish his loafers. In the past 10 years, he’s managed to tour 200-plus dates per year all over the world, start his own label, Camobear Records, ink deals with European labels Bella Union (UK) and V2 (Europe), license records to distributors in Japan, Europe and North America, and headline festivals and showcases worldwide.

He recently started a publishing company, Camobear Publishing, which has helped license hundreds of songs to action sports videos throughout North America, Europe and Japan. Recently, the Chicharones’ Guys Like Me was featured in Interview, a 2007 Steve Bushemi/Sienna Miller film, which was arty. Sienna was hot.

And the press love him. Jaded Critics found themselves shaving their moustaches and abandoning irony to lavish his praises.

Featured in Urb Magazine’s Next 100, profiles in Rockpile, Pitchfork, Magnet, Spin, CMJ, Exclaim, Incorucktible, countless weeklies and college papers and reviews from all over have only served to build the buzz to tinnitus levels.

His record, The World Famous Sex Buffet (September 2008), is produced by Juno Award-winner Roger Swan, and features A-list artists like Devin the Dude, Pigeon John, Cadence Weapon, Moka Only, Mother Mother, Classified, Awol One, Sleep and Skratch Basted.

Martinez has managed to find time amid all the deal-cutting to develop not just his solo career but that of two groups as well. He is a founding member of both The Chicharones and Pissed Off Wild.

The Chicharones is Martinez’ “underground pop” project with rapper Sleep of Oldominion. Together they have released two full-length albums since a chance meeting in 2001 between the two at SXSW led to the formation of the group. The Pissed Off Wild (or The POW) is a live rock band that Martinez fronts.

With a finished opus in the bank, the time has never been nigher. Before hipsters invented sarcasm, before coke rap and hip house, the Martinez lifestyle was there, giving the kids hope for the future, the feeling that all was not lost, that there could be intelligent, relevant music that made you move in all the right ways. It’s sex o’clock and the buffet’s calling.

ALBUMS OF INFLUENCE – JOSH MARTINEZ’S “BUCK UP PRINCESS VOL. II”

Ever since I found out that PRETENDING TO BE A GANGSTER really isn’t very cool, Josh Martinez has always been a hero of mine.

His lackadaisical attitude towards life, and the fact that he’s “JUST A DOOD” makes him incredibly easy to relate to on a personal level. He’s also got some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard, easily competing with lyrical greats such as BOB DYLAN, or ATMOSPHERE.

Unlike Atmosphere, however, Josh Martinez sprawls his subject matter much further than the after-hours bar, or his girlfriend’s broke down bedroom. On “Buck up Princess” Josh spits about girls, the hard times of trying to make it in underground rap, tour troubles, BC’s “real big trees”, and even what it’s like to be a hobo, trying to survive off of day-old-doughnuts, cans of beans, dumpster chicken, and river greens.

Originally from Nova Scotia, Buck Up Princess was the first record Josh made that allowed him the opportunity to take his show on the road. After travelling across the globe he eventually settled in Vancouver, BC, and Portland, OR, where he continues to throw super hyphy shows, and run his record label, CAMOBEAR RECORDS.

Josh has always been a huge influence on our music, and well as us personally, so it’s a HUGE honour to be RELEASING OUR LATEST EP WITH HIM AND HIS CREW.
